Seeking professional and youth companies, studios or schools that would like to support their own choreographers with their own students or company members performing their work; and have their work and their company be seen by other professionals in the field.  


Entries for the 2022 festival will open on November 1, 2021.


  • With their expressed written permission, work must be submitted by a company director under the choreographer’s name.
  • Work submitted for consideration MAY NOT include the choreographer as a performer unless the work was created by a high school or undergraduate student. 
  • MFA students who have done professional work prior to their graduate work should submit as an emerging/professional choreographer.
  • Professional choreographers must have at least two years of demonstrated choreographic work. Work may be for youth companies, universities and/or professional companies.
  • High school and undergraduate student choreographers must be at least a freshman in high school or currently enrolled in a college/university BFA or BA Dance program as of Fall 2018, and currently in training at a studio, conservatory, arts high school, or college/university. 
  • The work may be a duet, trio or ensemble. Solos will also be accepted, but work with multiple dancers is encouraged. 
  • The work does not have to be premiered at the festival however it needs to have been completed no earlier than January 1, 2018.
  • Dancers performing in the video submission should preferably be the dancers who will perform at the festival, however, this is not a requirement.
  • Dancers must be at least 14 years of age. Any exception must be granted by the NCDP artistic director.
  • If dancers are 18 years of age or under, each will be required to enroll in the NCDP festival intensive as full participants on August 10-15.

Award Incentives

Choreographers who submit work that is selected to be performed by your company, will be eligible for the following awards:

If  the Work is Created by a Professional Choreographer:

  • $2000 commission fee to set a new work on Repertory Dance Theatre (RDT) or another professional company during the 2020/21 season. In addition, all travel costs will be covered by the company.
  • A cash award of $500 for the runner-up

 If the Work is Created by a Student Choreographer:

  • $750 commission fee for the winner to set a new work at the 2020 New Century Dance Project. The work will be performed on the mainstage for the Gala Concert. Travel costs will also be covered for the choreographer. 
  • A cash award of $250 for the runner-up

What the Review Panel is Looking For

  • Concept, clarity of purpose of the dance.
  • Movement invention, exploration of movement to the purpose of the dance.
  • Development of thematic material.
  • Choreographic texture and individuality of creative voice.

Submission Requirements

  • Video of the work – high school and undergraduate submissions must be a minimum of three minutes and a maximum of 7 minutes; emerging/professional choreographer submissions must be a minimum of 5 minutes and a maximum of 10 minutes. May be a rehearsal filmed in the studio or of a performance on a concert stage. In either case, the work should be filmed in costume. No videos from a competition event will be accepted. If the work is still in progress at the time of submission, please send a sample consisting of at leas t2 minutes of the work.
  • An artist statement of intent about the work. This may include concept description, intent of music selection, inspiration behind the work, etc. The statement may not be longer than one single-spaced page.
  • A resume or curriculum vitae (CV). Student dance resumes should include their training and education to date, any choreography credits, as well as awards or recognitions (if applicable).
  • A $95 non-refundable application processing fee for emerging/professionals, and a $45 non-refundable fee for high school and undergraduate students. Waiver of the fee will be considered with a legitimate case for financial hardship.

Application Timeline

  • Submissions open on November 1, 2019
  • Deadline for submissions is March 15, 2020.
  • All applicants will receive an email regarding decisions no later than March 31, 2019.
  • Signed ’Commitment to Perform’ agreements and a non-refundable deposit of $100 for those selected. 
  • Waivers for the deposit will be granted for students and professionals who have a legitimate case for financial hardship.
  • If work is selected and includes students 18 or under, all student dancers must be enrolled for the NCDP festival intensive by May 15, 2020.

Need-Based Grants

A limited number of grants will be available to choreographers and or performers who need financial assistance for travel and/or hotel. Applications will be available to those who are selected to perform and will be due prior to the decision-making deadline of March 31.

Intellectual Property and Copyright Requirements

  • All submitted work must be wholly original and may not infringe upon the copyright or other intellectual property or other legal or moral rights of any other person or entity.
  • Applicants are responsible for obtaining and securing any and all rights, licenses, consent, and permissions, if applicable, from third parties in relation to any copyrighted material that is not your own (e.g., music used in your performance).
  • If you are submitting a work and you are not the choreographer, you must obtain written permission and submit to the NCDP artistic director. This will be required as part of the confirmation process if the work is selected for the festival.
  • If your work has been submitted to other competitions, you are responsible for getting permission to submit to NCDP.
