Choreography

students; emerging and professional choreographers; companies, studios and schools

Francisco Gella, founding artistic director of the New Century Dance Project (NCDP), invites professional and student choreographers to submit their work to be considered as part of the 2019 Gala Concert on Saturday, August 17 and the Student Choreographer’s Showcase on Friday, August 16. The works selected for the gala will be presented in the 550-seat Jeanne Wagner Theatre in Downtown Salt Lake City, home to resident companies Repertory Dance Theatre and the Ririe Woodbury Dance Company. Please be sure to follow all instructions carefully. Eligibility and submission requirements must be strictly adhered to or applicants risk disqualification.

Deadlines

The call for the 2019 festival in August has closed. Entries for the 2020 festival will open on November 1, 2019.

Eligibility

The NCDP artistic director invites choreography in any genre or style. The festival’s creative team encourages innovative and contemporary approaches to choreography, including fused forms (e.g. contemporary ballet, contemporary jazz, African-modern, contemporary hip-hop, etc.), dance theater, and experimental work; international dance styles and traditions, and work influenced by such are also encouraged. Diversity of work, performers and choreographers is highly valued.

Work Created by Professional Choreographers:

  • May submit as an independent entry or under the name of a company (professional or youth).
  • With their expressed written permission, work may be submitted by a company director under the choreographer’s name.
  • Work submitted for consideration MAY NOT include the choreographer as a performer.
  • MFA students who have done professional work prior to their graduate work should submit under the ‘professional category’.
  • At least three years of demonstrated choreographic work. Work may be for youth companies, universities and/or professional companies.
  • The work may be a solo, duet, trio or ensemble.
  • The work does not have to be premiered at the festival however it needs to have been completed no earlier than January 1, 2017.
  • Dancers performing in the video submission should preferably be the dancers who will perform at the festival, however, this is not a requirement.
  • Dancers must be at least 14 years of age. Any exception must be granted by the NCDP artistic director.
  • If dancers are 18 years of age or under, each will be required to enroll as full participants for NCDP on August 13-17, 2019.

Work Created by Student Choreographers:

  • Must be at least a freshman in high school or currently enrolled in a college/university BFA or BA Dance program as of Fall 2018.
  • Must be currently in training at a studio, conservatory, arts high school, or college/university.
  • College students who apply must be pursuing a BFA or BA in Dance.
  • Work submitted for consideration MAY include the choreographer as a performer.
  • The work may be a solo, duet, trio or ensemble.
  • The work does not have to be premiered at the festival however it needs to have been completed no earlier than January 1, 2017.
  • Dancers performing in the video submission should preferably be the dancers who will perform at the festival, however this is not a requirement.
  • Dancers will be required to enroll as full participants for NCDP on August 13-17, 2019.
  • Dancers must be at least 14 years of age. Any exception must be granted by the NCDP artistic director.

What is Provided and What is Expected

The festival provides the concert venue and all production expenses (except costumes and props) at no cost to the performers. Festival will provide promotional support. Each choreographer will be featured on the website, the printed concert program, and as requested will be set up for interviews with media outlets. Choreographers will also receive flyers and images to share with others and to post on social media. Each choreographer will receive a professional video of the performance in both wide and close-up view. If selected, each choreographer/company/director who submitted the application will need to do the following to secure their spot in the concert line-up:

  1. Submit a $250 refundable commitment fee.  If the commitment is followed through on, the fee will be refunded after the concert on Saturday, August 13. Waivers for the $250 refundable deposit will be granted for students and professionals who are unable to pay.
  2. If students up to age 21 are performing in the work, they are required to register to participate in the festival by enrolling for a student festival pass. This will ensure every student gets the full educational value of the festival program.

Award Incentives

Choreographers who submit work that is selected to be performed will be eligible for the following awards:

Work Created by Professional Choreographers:

  • $2500 commission fee to set a new work on Repertory Dance Theatre (RDT) during the 2019/20 season. In addition, all travel costs will be covered by the company.

Work Created by Student Choreographers:

  • $1000 commission fee to set a new work at the 2020 New Century Dance Project. The work will be performed on the mainstage for the Gala Concert. Travel costs will also be covered for the choreographer.
*Runner-up awards for both categories will include other cash prizes.

Intellectual Property and Copyright Requirements

  • All submitted work must be wholly original and may not infringe upon the copyright or other intellectual property or other legal or moral rights of any other person or entity.
  • Applicants are responsible for obtaining and securing any and all rights, licenses, consent, and permissions, if applicable, from third parties in relation to any copyrighted material that is not your own (e.g., music used in your performance).
  • If you are submitting a work and you are not the choreographer, you must obtain written permission and submit to the NCDP artistic director. This will be required as part of the confirmation process if the work is selected for the festival.
  • If your work has been submitted to other competitions, you are responsible for getting permission to submit to NCDP.

What the Review Panel is Looking For

  • Concept, clarity of purpose of the dance.
  • Movement invention, exploration of movement to the purpose of the dance.
  • Development of thematic material.
  • Choreographic texture and individuality of creative voice.

Submission Requirements

  • Video of the work – must be a minimum of three minutes and a maximum of 15 minutes. Longer works up to the maximum length are encouraged. May be a rehearsal filmed in the studio or of a performance on a concert stage. In either case, the work should be filmed in costume. No videos from a competition event will be accepted. If the work is still in progress at the time of submission, please send a sample consisting of at least 3 minutes of the work.
  • An artist statement of intent about the work. This may include concept description, intent of music selection, inspiration behind the work, etc. The statement may not be longer than one single-spaced page.
  • A resume or curriculum vitae (CV). Student dance resumes should include their training and education to date, any choreography credits, as well as awards or recognitions (if applicable).
  • A $95 non-refundable application processing fee for professionals, and a $45 non-refundable fee for students. Waiver of the fee will be considered with a legitimate case for financial hardship.

Application Timeline

  • Submissions open on November 1, 2018
  • Deadline for submissions is February 28, 2019.
  • All applicants will receive an email regarding decisions no later than March 15, 2019.
  • Signed ’Commitment to Perform’ agreements and a deposit of $250 by selected choreographers or the companies who submitted will be due no later than April 15, 2019. The deposit will be refunded if the choreography or company fulfills their ‘Commitment to Perform’.
  • Waivers for the $250 refundable deposit will be granted for students and professionals who are unable to pay.
  • If work is selected and includes students 18 or under, all student dancers must be enrolled for NCDP by May 1, 2019.

Need-Based Grants

A limited number of grants will be available to choreographers and or performers who need financial assistance for travel and/or hotel. Applications will be available to those who are selected to perform and will be due prior to the decision-making deadline of March 15.
